Learn square dance — no partner, no experience
You would like to learn to dance but have nobody to come along with? That is exactly what square dance is made for: the couples change constantly, the figures are called live, and everybody here started at zero once.
We are the Bavarian Starlights from Ensdorf near Amberg. If you are starting from scratch, you join us through a beginners' course — everything is built up from the ground there, and afterwards you dance with us. The next course is being prepared; write to us and you will be the first to hear about it.
You already dance? Then you do not need a course — come to a Thursday club night as our guest. Register a visit
What you do not need
Three reasons that are not reasons
These are the three sentences we hear most often — and three times the same answer.
“I have no partner”
You do not need one. The square rotates — over an evening you dance with everybody.
“My English is not good enough”
The figures have English names, the explanations are in German. The words are all you need.
“I cannot dance at all”
Perfect — that is exactly what the beginners' course is for. There is nothing to memorise.
How to get started
That depends on whether you already dance — the two ways really are different.
Starting from scratch: through the beginners' course
A course builds the entry from the ground up: one fixed evening a week, one group starting together, and experienced dancers from the club in the square to help. At the end you know the Mainstream programme — the base with which you can dance anywhere in the world where square dance is danced. With us, that's where we take you on from, further towards Plus.
The next course is being prepared. We will announce date, place and fee as soon as they are settled. Leave your details below and you will be the first to know — without obligation of any kind.
And why not simply drop in on a Thursday? Because our club night is for dancing, not teaching: the programme is Plus and A1, with an A2 preview on the first Thursday of the month. Without the figures in your head it would be a long evening. The course is the short way straight into it.
You already dance: as a guest on a Thursday
If you dance Mainstream or above, you are welcome as our guest at any time — no course, no membership, no cost. We dance every Thursday from 7:30 pm at the Pfarrsaal St. Jakob, Hauptstr. 5a, 92266 Ensdorf; on the first Thursday of the month A1 with an A2 preview (registration required).
Please let us know beforehand — then we know you are coming and somebody will meet you at the door. All dates are on the schedule, and more about how an evening works on Club Night.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a dance partner?
No. Square dance rotates constantly — over the course of an evening you dance with many different people. Singles are expressly welcome, and those who come as a couple do not spend the whole evening dancing only with each other.
Do I need to speak English?
The calls — the figures announced by the caller — are named in English worldwide, and we explain them in German. You learn what the words mean, not the language. If German is not your first language either, tell us: our club is used to that.
I have never danced before. Is that enough?
Yes — that is exactly what the beginners’ course is for. There are no step sequences to memorise, only figures that are added one by one. Experienced dancers from the club stand in the square with you and help.
Can I not simply watch a club night first?
If you already dance: gladly — just register as a guest. If you are starting from scratch it will not help you much: our club nights are for dancing, not for teaching, and we dance Plus and A1 there. That is why newcomers join through the beginners’ course; afterwards you are right in the middle of it.
When does the next course start?
That is not fixed yet — we are preparing it right now. Whoever gets in touch through the form on this page hears the date, place and price first, before we announce it publicly.
What does a beginners’ course cost?
The fee depends on the form the course takes; it stays within the range of what club and adult-education courses cost in this region. We will name the exact price as soon as the course is settled.
What should I wear?
Comfortable everyday clothes and shoes you can turn in. Petticoats and western shirts are still popular here, but they have not been compulsory for more than twenty years.
How long until I can really dance along?
Dancing the Mainstream level confidently traditionally takes something in the order of 30 evenings. The CALLERLAB reform of 1 September 2026, which merges Basic and Mainstream into a single programme of at most 50 calls, should shorten that. It is fun from the very first evening of the course.
How old is everybody else?
Mixed. Teenagers dance with us alongside people well past 80 — most are between 40 and 70. There is no age limit in either direction.
